About the workshop

We are not just one but all the stages of life. What has been, what is, and what will be is alive in our bodies, hearts, and minds. In Cycles we give ourselves the opportunity to fully embody them all, from birth to death, by moving with the shapes, the breath, the rhythms of a lifetime.

The Cycles map is a journey of endless investigation – one in which we create the opportunity to meet and melt old wounds, move and be moved by the medicine of forgiveness, and explore and expand the possibility and potential of being a wholistic being.

Whether young or older, your first or your latest Cycles experience, this workshop is for every human being with stories to express, realities to accept, ancestral wisdom to uncover, and nascent wonders to recover. Join us as we grow together.

Tammy Burstein

(upcoming UK Heartbeats)

Venue

Drama & Dance Studio

Badminton School, Westbury Road, Bristol BS9 3BA – a beautiful venue in its own peaceful grounds.
For local bus routes see ‘Other local info/resources’ below.

Click title to close, & (on wider screens) anywhere on map to shrink annoying white box!

The studio is spacious with an excellent floor, all recently refurbished for dance and theatre teaching – shown here set up for a previous 5Rhythms workshop in 2023.

Badminton School drama/dance studio

This workshop is fully residential in the school’s ‘sixth form’ block – so all accommodation is in single and twin rooms (no dorms!)

  • Shared accommodation:
Accommodation is in twin or single rooms, each with a washbasin, and with plenty of shower rooms.
  • Room allocations will be male/female/non-binary – if non-binary, please indicate preferred share on the booking form. Those choosing to stay on Sunday night will be kept close together, so that other parts of the block can be vacated for cleaning.
    • Choosing sharers: If there is somebody with whom you wish to share a room, we need to hear separately from both parties. Please ask your ‘roomie’ to contact Jon to confirm.
    • Single rooms: Single rooms may be requested, on payment of a single supplement of £55.
    • Ensuite flats: One may be available at a premium rate. Please contact Jon (via a ‘get in touch’ button) if you are interested.
  • Local dancers: Staying and eating together onsite is an important part of the deeper process of a residential workshop. That’s a key reason why ‘non-residential’ bookings are not available at this time (see also FAQ below).

Meals

Your workshop fee includes all meals.

The catering is varied and flexible, but should you wish to supplement the food provided, local options are somewhat limited, but there are cafés and a deli about 8 minutes walk away, and a Waitrose supermarket 15 minutes away.

Meals will be served in the onsite refectory. The standard is high, and we have discussed with the chef to ensure suitability of the menu for dancers.

All meals Wed-Sun are included; if you are arriving early enough on Tuesday, dinner at 6pm is available as an added option, but MUST be booked in advance. See the ‘drop-down’ under ‘Prices, Booking & Payment’ for details.

Most dietary requirements can be catered for by prior arrangement at no additional charge (see booking form).

Travel & local info/resources

Click on a heading for info and links:

There are flights direct to Bristol and Cardiff airports from many European cities and farther afield. (If you have to fly to one of the London airports, Heathrow is only a 2 hour bus ride to Bristol – quicker than to many parts of London!)

There are direct trains to Bristol from London and many other cities across the UK.
National Rail website

Similarly there are low-cost bus links to either the rail station or the city centre bus station.
National Express website
(other operators are available and often cheaper, e.g. Megabus).

IF POSSIBLE PLEASE CAR-SHARE 🙂
Bristol is close to the junction of  the M4 and M5.
[Google map to approx location (in new tab)]
The Car Park has limited space – please share with other dancers if you can.

To reach the venue from the centre of Bristol, the easiest local buses are the numbers 1, 2 and 3 (and 4 isn’t bad, but not very different from 3 anyway), so if you find somewhere near one of those routes, your journey in and out will be easy. You can download route maps (look for ‘Henleaze’) and timetables here:
Bristol bus routes 1 & 2
Bristol bus routes 3 & 4
(And if they change their website and those break, go to the First Bus regional home page here.)

[More may be added nearer the time]

Local shops – food:
There are a couple of cafes, a deli and some local shops in Henleaze – ~7-8 minutes walk.
There is also a Waitrose supermarket – ~10-12 mins walk.

Green spaces:
The campus itself is very green. We are also less than 10 minutes walk from the top end of The Downs (open grass).
For woodland, Blaise Castle Estate (a wooded gorge and arboretum) and, across the famous suspension bridge, Leigh Woods – both popular for early morning walks (though you might want to hook up with somebody with a car).

Exploring Bristol:
We are about a 20-30 minute bus ride to ‘The Centre’ (near Bristol Harbourside).
Before or after the workshop, you might also like to visit Gloucester Road, for lots of independent shops, cafes, bars etc.

(See also FAQ below.)

COVID-19: [REMOVE?]

  • At present there are no specific requirements in place, but should this change you will be advised, and may be required to comply with any regulations in force.
  • At a minimum, we may request that you self test (‘lateral flow’, aka ‘rapid antigen’) the day before or the first morning of the workshop.
  • You must not attend if you are experiencing symptoms characteristic of covid, including body aches, extreme fatigue or difficulty breathing. We request that you seriously consider whether you should attend if you have significant other cold/flu-like symptoms that could be either covid or flu.

    Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

This is a fully residential workshop, and staying onsite, and fully ‘immersed’, is part of the process. Mainly for this reason, a non-residential option is not available at this time, even for local dancers.

If you concerned about privacy/’space’, there are plenty of single rooms for a modest supplement, the venue is in a large, quiet and beautiful campus, and for even more space, The Downs (a large open green space) is a short walk away.

If you are asking for financial reasons, the residential element of the cost is relatively small (much less than most local alternative accommodation), so you wouldn’t save much anyway.

NOTE: There may be a small number of non-residential places, if/when residential accommodation is full, and/or at the last minute (14 days before), if we are not fully booked, or have late cancellations that no-one on the residentials waiting list can take up. If this is the only way you can attend, let us know – we shall contact you if and when there are any such spaces.

Sorry, no – 5 nights is the minimum – we pay the venue for your Tues/Wed bed and breakfast, whether you choose to take it up or not. (However, do let us know if you definitely don’t want Wednesday breakfast, and we can tell the chef, possibly reducing food waste.)

Please arrive Tuesday afternoon/evening if you can – check-in from 4pm – we strongly recommend it, to give you time to ‘land’ before we start 🙂 But if you can only arrive on Wednesday morning, please make sure you arrive early enough to check in to your room, and be ready to start by 10am. Thank you.

No, they’ll be better. The  issue which led to a ‘quality lapse’ for part of that workshop has been resolved, and we are assured that the quality will be consistent this time 🙂

The kitchen are used to catering for very diverse diets indeed, and they want everyone to be happy with their meals – if you’re concerned, please let us know your needs, and can talk to the chef – you may be surprised what’s possible 🙂
(Note: We pay the venue ‘per person’ including accommodation and food, so meals are not optional.)

At most, one other person – all the accommodation is in twins and singles – no ‘dormitories’!

You can guarantee a single room with a supplement of just £55 (subject to availability).

And there are lots of showers!

Yes – remember, this is usually occupied by teenagers!! There’s wifi throughout the campus, at its best in the accommodation block – the rooms have all have desks, and there’s also a common room.

    Further details

Here’s some general information applicable to In-Rhythm classes and workshops – it’s included here because most of it is relevant here too. Some further information specific to this workshop is shown in ‘variations’ below, but please read the emails you will be sent before the start of the workshop!
    (click/tap on heading to expand)

5Rhythms is both a very ‘free’ individual practice which offers significant permission – while simultaneously being a group/community practice which calls for consideration and respect for the group process.

    Bring & wear

    • Loose clothing in which to move freely, and have a good sweat! – layers are good;
    • Something warm to put on or wrap round you when not dancing;
    • A water bottle;
    • Your curiosity!
      also…
    • Please don’t wear any kind of fragrance – the dance is an environment that heightens allergies and other sensitivities.
    • For safety, bags, valuables etc may be brought into the hall/studio.

    Some dos & don’ts

    • FEET:
      Many find bare feet easy and comfortable – some prefer Dance Sneakers which prevent sore feet and give support to arches, knees and ankles;
    • Other shoes are not recommended: trainers have too much grip so are hard on knees.
    • Don’t dance in socks – they slip too easily!

“Do you have the discipline to be a free spirit?” – Gabrielle Roth

This is a meditation/embodiment practice which has clear boundaries which need to be honoured if the full potential of this work is to be achieved:

    • Don’t use phones/tablets, even on silent – if you need to check on a babysitter or something, take devices outside the hall/studio (or, at Horfield, outside the building) and check them there.
    • Don’t talk – words take us straight back into our heads!
    • Arrive on time – the warm-up, including the initial ‘unguided’ warm-up is an important part of the process. The doors will be locked and there is no admittance 15 minutes after the start.
    • Stay until the end both for yourself, and for the group – if you leave early you will disrupt the collective energy and your own process will be incomplete.

Note: Some Variations from above ‘standard’ info (see also pre-workshop emails):

    • We have exclusive use of the venue, with use of an additional room for changing etc. This means that bags and valuables should not be brought into the studio, as they can safely be left in the changing space while dancing, and even overnight.
    • If you are unavoidably going to be late, please contact the mobile number provided in your welcome letter, as we shall be locking the door once we start.
