5 day programme, blending the potency of 5Rhythms dance with a wealth of creative exercises, in a cocktail designed to unlock your latent creativity and discover the natural brilliance of your innate Artistic Self.
Within each of us there is an artist – maybe a poet, painter, dancer, writer, an actor or a musician. Possibly all — probably more. Within a culture that belittles and often condemns artistic expression, many of us have been suppressed and denied for so long we have become blocked.
For creativity to thrive it needs recognition, permission and support. This course is designed to create the conditions and give you the tools you will need to set your innate, spontaneous creativity free.
Teacher: Bernadette brings a fresh understanding to this issue, the creative urge, not as an indulgence to be squeezed into the corners of our lives, but as a vital driving force — central to the experience being human — the expression of which delights the innate impulse for growth towards becoming more fully and uniquely ourselves.
Bernadette uses 5Rhythms Dance to unlock the creative impulse. At once a meditation, a means of creative expression, a catharsis, and an art form, the dance takes us into connection with our bodies and our intuitive minds – which ignites the creative processes.
The founder of 5Rhythms Dance, Gabrielle Roth, taught that the greatest joy of the practice was the transformation of our suffering into art.
“The soul is an artist. Its nature is to create”
~Gabrielle Roth
We tend to see our lives as small and ordinary. But when you discover the detail of what each of us has lived — the obstacles faced, the choices made — you realise that everyone is the hero in their own story. Each of us faces an uncertain future with our own brand of courage – not much different from the heroes of much loved stories.

The greatest gift of the 5Rhythms is that, when engaged with deeply and fully, it takes us on a journey of progressive expansion towards our full potential as creative, loving beings. Catalytic in nature, it works to free the body, open the heart, still the mind and awaken consciousness. Ultimately, this entirely physical practice is a spiritual experience.

5R Waves Teacher Training:
This workshop counts towards Teacher Training pre-requisites as either:
– 5 days ‘Elective’ (as a ‘workshop’); or
– the hours we actually dance can be credited to your Waves Hours (will be ~16-20hrs).
There are no formal prerequisites for this retreat, but it is suggested that you have attended at least a few drop-in classes with an accredited 5Rhythms Teacher beforehand. Related ecstatic dance practices such as Movement Medicine, Soul Motion and Open Floor are also helpful, as are other practices which bring focus to movement, attention and breath, such as yoga.
COVID-19: At present there are no special requirements in force – should the situation change, we will obviously comply with whatever regulations are brought in.
This workshop takes place in Wales where, to satisfy Welsh Government and venue requirements, we shall operate as a ‘Covid-secure private group’. In essence this means pre-workshop self-tests and, during the workshop, we behave as a large ‘bubble’. If you have any concerns/queries at all about the practicalities of this, please feel free to call Jon.
Middleton, Rhossili, Swansea SA3 1PL
The dance hall is light and spacious, with a natural wood floor.
This workshop is residential; the preferred option is to stay ‘onsite’ in the bunkhouse. If this is not suitable, there is a nearby campsite or there are cottages in the village – these are more costly if available at all – but please call to discuss first.
* Note re single supplements: If we are full, or nearly so, you will be guaranteed a twin room (share with no more than one other) and the bulk of your supplement refunded.
Rhossili Village Hall and Bunkhouse is run by Trustees for the benefit of the local community.
The ‘board and lodging’ cost includes three tasty and nutritious meals a day provided by MAJiC Times conscious catering; plus teas, coffee and drinks in between.
We are delighted to be working with Majic Times, who have many years’ experience providing healthy, nutritious and sustaining vegetarian/vegan food at conscious dance and other workshops.
Specific dietary requirements can almost always be catered for by prior arrangement, supported by discussion on arrival.

PLEASE CAR-SHARE WITHIN THE GROUP – PUBLIC TRANSPORT IS POSSIBLE BUT VERY SLOW 🙂
(contact Jon to coordinate)
Rhossili is about 2 hours drive from Bristol, along the M4 to Swansea, then along the south side of the Gower Peninsula. The postcode for SatNavs is SA3 1PL, but on Google Maps it’s more precise if you search for ‘Rhossili Bunkhouse’.

The Car Park has space for around 10 vehicles (a couple more if they are all parked considerately).
There are direct trains from Bristol, Cardiff and London to Swansea. There it’s a 15 minute walk (or short hop on a local bus) from rail station to bus station, then an hour’s bus ride right to the door of the venue (make sure you get off at the Village Hall, don’t go all the way to Worm’s Head!) Alternatively, you can probably arrange for someone who’s driving to pick you up at Swansea 🙂

Bus route Swansea-Rhossili [NB: APPEARS TO BE RUNNING, BUT NOT ON SUNDAY] – we are more likely to arrange lifts and cab-shares.
There are flights direct to Cardiff and Bristol airports from many European cities and even farther afield. (If you have to fly to one of the London airports, you might want to arrive in the UK a day or two before, or you will have very long day travelling!)
