About the workshop

The latest regulations from the Welsh Government once again mean that, sadly, our venue is unable to open so we have had to cancel.
Why not book instead on our 5 day workshop ‘The Deepening’ in September?

Reconnecting is offered as support as we emerge from this period of isolation and separation. It is the chance to reconnect deeply and beautifully: With yourself, both body and heart; With each other – in friendship and love; With the freedom and liberation in the dance; With nature’s elements so powerfully present on the Gower Peninsula.

Bunkhouse accommodation: £125.00 per room (4 nights)
Rooms accommodate 2 or 3 people, and participants will be assisted to form ‘bubbles’ in advance of the workshop, for room sharing.

The balance of tuition, food and accommodation is payable, by bank transfer or cash, immediately on confirmation that we are able to go ahead (likely 2-3 weeks before).

Cancellation:
In line with our usual Terms & Conditions:
– if we are forced to cancel (e.g. due to covid regulations), moneys paid will be refunded in full, or rolled forward to a future booking (at your option);
– if you cancel, we regret that your deposit is non-refundable, due to the the level of financial commitment involved in setting up residential workshops.
Further:
non-payment of balance may result in your place being offered to someone on the waiting list, as our numbers are very limited, and the timescales short.

Prerequisites

There are no formal prerequisites for this workshop, but it is recommended that you have attended at least a few drop-in classes with an accredited 5 Rhythms Teacher beforehand. Related ecstatic dance practices such as Movement Medicine, Soul Motion and Open Floor are also helpful, as are other practices which bring focus to movement, attention and breath, such as yoga.

COVID-19: All participants will be required to either:
show evidence of vaccination; or
– have a ‘non-positive rapid test result’, ideally 3 days beforehand, and on arrival.

The dance hall is light and spacious, with a natural wood floor.

This workshop is residential; we strongly encourage you to stay ‘onsite’, ideally in the bunkhouse.

  • Rhossili bunkhouse bedroomShared accommodation: The Bunkhouse is comfortable and inexpensive (5* ‘Excellent’ on Google reviews). Bunkrooms are simply furnished, each sleeping 2 or 3 people (subject to current restrictions) in single beds and solid wood bunk beds, fixed to the wall for stability. There are showers on each floor, a lounge/dining room and kitchen.
  • Room allocations will be discussed and, if sharing is permitted, preferences accommodated as far as possible.
  • Single rooms: If sharing is permitted, some rooms may still be requested for one, on payment of a single supplement*.
  • Staying nearby: This is a residential workshop, but for those requiring greater comfort/privacy, there are other options, including lovely cottages and a local B&B very close by [links below]. Please note: * EVERYTHING IS HEAVILY BOOKED * (a) you will have to be within walking distance; (b) you will need to book early – in this beautiful place, they will book up; (c) you will still pay a contribution for daytime use of the facilities * Please speak with us first! *

* Note re single supplements: If we are full, or nearly so, you will be guaranteed a twin room (share with no more than one other) and the bulk of your supplement refunded (subject to discussion re covid-safety).

Rhossili Village Hall and Bunkhouse is run by Trustees for the benefit of the local community.

Meals

The ‘board and lodging’ cost includes three meals a day from Wednesday dinner through to Sunday breakfast, plus healthy snacks, fruit and teas in between.

Malcolm Barradell - Cafe MomoWe are delighted to be working with the celebrated Café Momo, who have many years’ experience providing healthy, nutritious and sustaining vegetarian/vegan food at conscious dance and other workshops.

Specific dietary requirements can usually be catered for by prior arrangement.

Rhossili is about 2 hours drive from Bristol, along the M4 to Swansea, then along the south side of the Gower Peninsula. The postcode for SatNavs is SA3 1PL, but on Google Maps it’s more precise if you search for ‘Rhossili Bunkhouse’.

The Car Park has space for around 10 vehicles (a couple more if they are all parked considerately).

There are direct trains from Bristol, Cardiff and London to Swansea. There it’s a 15 minute walk (or short hop on a local bus) from rail station to bus station, then [this bus route may have been suspended] an hour’s bus ride right to the door of the venue (make sure you get off at the Village Hall, don’t go all the way to Worm’s Head!) Alternatively, you can probably arrange for someone who’s driving to pick you up at Swansea 🙂

There are flights direct to Cardiff and Bristol airports from many European cities and even farther afield. (If you have to fly to one of the London airports, you might want to arrive in the UK a day or two before, or you will have very long day travelling!)

    5 Rhythms Teacher Training

    This workshop fulfils the requirements for the Waves hours prerequisites for those on the Teaching path – please let us know if this is your intention, so we can ensure that everything is correctly documented, and that you are aware of any specific detailed requirements.

    General information applicable to all our classes and workshops:

    5 Rhythms is both a very ‘free’ individual practice which offers significant permission – while simultaneously being a group/community practice which calls for consideration and respect for the group process.

    Bring & wear

    • Loose clothing in which to move freely, and have a good sweat! – layers are good;
    • Something warm to put on or wrap round you when not dancing;
    • A water bottle;
    • Your curiosity!

    • Please don’t wear any kind of fragrance – the dance is an environment that heightens allergies and other sensitivities.
    • For safety, bags, valuables etc may be brought into the hall/studio.

    Some dos & don’ts

    • FEET:
      Many find bare feet easy and comfortable – some prefer Dance Sneakers which prevent sore feet and give support to arches, knees and ankles;
    • Other shoes are not recommended: trainers have too much grip so are hard on knees.
    • Don’t dance in socks – they slip too easily!

    This is a meditation/embodiment practice which has clear boundaries which need to be honoured if the full potential of this work is to be achieved:

    • Don’t use phones/tablets, even on silent – if you need to check on a babysitter or something, take devices outside the hall/studio (or, at Horfield, outside the building) and check them there.
    • Don’t talk – words take us straight back into our heads!
    • Arrive on time – the warm-up, including the initial ‘unguided’ warm-up is an important part of the process. The doors will be locked and there is no admittance 15 minutes after the start.
    • Stay until the end both for yourself, and for the group – if you leave early you will disrupt the collective energy and your own process will be incomplete.

    Zoom dancing – some guidelines

    You are responsible for setting up your own safe dancing space, and for holding your own physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual wellbeing!

    Make sure the space is safe and give yourself as much room to move as possible.

    Have drinking water on hand, and anything you might need to make yourself comfortable, both during your dance and immediately afterwards.

    Tidy your space in advance, and set up anything else that would help make the vibe nice – lighting, an altar, etc.

    Move at your own pace and in ways that suit your own body.

    Look after yourself, anyone else (including pets!) in the room, and the environment you are in.

    In-Rhythm and the teacher/facilitator cannot take responsibility for any injuries sustained as a result of participating in these sessions.

    And finally… please let’s keep our online spaces completely safe and respectful – you agree when you sign up to make no recording of any kind, whether audio, video or screenshots etc. Thank you.

    And finally… here are a few ‘process’ tips to help you drop deeper:

    • Set up the space (and yourself) beforehand (see above). If possible remove/conceal any obvious distractions.
    • Try not to be transfixed by the screen – this is not like a Zoom ‘meeting’ or TV show – the screen is there to remind you others are dancing ‘with’ you, not as a focus for your attention.
    • Switch off ‘Self view’ – it’s the one that’s hardest to ignore! We usually cover the mirrors in a dance studio in 5 Rhythms – it’s the same thing.

    Zoom ‘Livestreams’

    ‘In person’ classes may occasionally also be livestreamed via Zoom, for wider accessibility, especially for those who cannot attend in person.

    As indicated above, online participants agree on booking not to record the session in any way (audio or visual). There is also an area of the dance floor not visible on Zoom.

    This would usually be made clear on booking but, if added later, anyone attending ‘in person’ will be advised well in advance of the class, and offered a transfer or refund if not happy with this.

    To ensure that we all get the best out of our opportunity to dance together again 🙂 for your peace of mind, and out of respect for other dancers:

    • Since we have to check everyone in, it is now essential that you arrive on time. The doors will be locked and there is no admittance 15 minutes after the start. Thank you.
    • We need to continue to care for each other, so we request that you only attend if:
      • you are fully vaccinated, OR
      • you have had covid, confirmed by a positive PCR test in the last 180 days, OR
      • you have self-tested negative within 48 hours before the class.

      (This is based on the criteria for obtaining an NHS Covid Pass).
      Please do not come to the class if you or a member of your household has symptoms that could be covid
      (test kits available from gov.uk here);
      (NHS Covid Pass available here, not required by us, but useful to have).

    • Please bring your own water.
    • In line with our risk assessment, based on official & sectoral guidelines for exercise spaces:
      • total numbers in the class may be limited;
      • the venue will be ventilated while we are dancing;
      • you are requested to provide contact details for NHS Test & Trace, either in advance (on booking), or on arrival by either scanning an NHS QR Code or on paper – see Note below, and Privacy Policy addendum for details.
    • We shall be working with distance awareness – which is in any case, simply an extension/application of a core aspect of 5 Rhythms practice 🙂
      Specifically:
      • please observe the usual social distancing protocols;
      • once inside the venue, please greet with a smile across our safe space;
      • we shall not be working with physical contact at all.
    • Commonly touched surfaces (doorhandles etc) will be sanitised in advance; hand sanitiser and paper towels/tissues will be available.
    • Wearing a face covering is your own choice, but please note that wearing a mask during exercise is not recommended in the English government guidelines. Having said that…
    • For those who find vocal expression is habitually a part of your dance, it is important that you bring a scarf or mask specifically for that purpose so you are sounding through a soft barrier.

    Notes:

    Our guidelines and venue risk assessments have been prepared with reference to national regulations and current scientific understanding of covid-19 transmission, specifically as interpreted by UK Active, the national organisation representing operators of fitness venues, and similar bodies worldwide. Statistical evidence to date suggests that these precautions result in remarkably little transmission.

    We are required to ask for your contact details, in case requested by NHS Test & Trace. It is not currently compulsory to provide this information, but is strongly recommended. While infection rates remain low, the likelihood of contact information given to us subsequently being requested by and passed on to NHS Test and Trace during the following 21 days is extremely small.

    If we are requested to share our class records, you would then be contacted by NHS Test and Trace. Depending on the circumstances and the length of time that has elapsed, this could include arranging for you to be tested, asking you to take extra care with social distancing and/or – in some circumstances – asking you to self-isolate.

    The above information is intended to be helpful for our class and workshop attendees, and supplements other general advice regarding symptoms, self-isolation etc., including any local regulations currently in force.
